A hard working farmer's friend.

In 1947 the Land Rover started life as a Rover car company project for a 4x4 do anything go anywhere vehicle, much like the American Jeep had been. It was an instant success with 100,000 Land Rovers being produced in the 7 years following 1947.
In 1990 the standard Land Rover had it's name changed to the Defender.
The vehicles are available today in three different wheelbases 90, 110 and 130, as well as all kinds of bodywork variations such as pickups, hard tops, station wagons and double cabs. Additionally many specialist variants are produced including small emergency firetrucks for example.

Defenders use a full time 4 wheel drive system with a differential lock in the drive train between front and rear axles to avoid wheel spin in slippery conditions. The most modern examples have such high tech equipment as ABS braking and traction control fitted as optional extras.
Powering the Land Rover Defender is a 2.5 Litre 5 cylinder diesel engine. Maximum power produced by this unit is 90 KW at an rpm of 4,200. Maximum torque of 300 Nm is produced at a low 1,950 rpm, a substantial figure as you would expect for a big diesel.
Fuel economy ranges between 20 and 30 mile per gallon when driven on roads. At speed fuel economy suffers due to poor aerodynamics. The chunky LandRover has the aerodynamics of a brick with a house sticking on it.

These are both short wheelbase Defenders, the right one is a 2002 model the left is a few years old.
The load carrying potential varies between models. The agile short wheelbase model is rated for 852Kg, this rises to 1605Kg for the medium wheelbase Land Rover.
Weight of the actual vehicle varies between models as you would expect. The hardtop 110 wheelbase version has a kerb weight of 1920 Kg rising to over 3 tonnes fully laden.
The standard Defender is fitted with tough steel wheels and an allpurpose tyre designed to perform both on and off the road. Options exist for alloy wheels and specialist off road tyres.

Land Rover Defenders are heavily used in the military, not just by the British. They have served the forces virtually since the beginning of the Land Rovers history. Farmers also make heavy use of the vehicle, the examples pictured on this page are in the service of a farmer.
