Nissan 350Z model touring car to 1/10 scale by Tamiya

Details and pictures of the Nissan 350Z race car model based on a TT01 chassis.

The model Nissan 350Z after a test drive.

The parts that come in the Nissan 350z model kit. All bagged and ready for some quality car kit building time.

This model of the Nissan 350z is built from the Tamiya kit. The car is built on the TT01 chassis which is one of Tamiya's entry level 4 wheel drive 1/10 scale model touring car chassis.

All the parts to build the model car were included except radio equipment, batteries and paint. A mechanical 3 step forward and reverse speed controller was included in this example of the kit.

Superb Tamiya bodyshell.

The one piece plastic main chassis component.

The TT01 chassis features a shaft driven four wheel drive system, non adjustable double wishbone suspension allround, two geared type differential units, a one piece tub style plastic main chassis and coil over shock absorbers with friction damping. The Nissan 350z modelled bodyshell is the usual high quality lexan Tamiya item which requires trimming and painting.

Construction time for this model car took me around four or five hours not including the bodyshell preparation (this includes tea drinking time). Component count is low with the TT01 chassis and construction straightforward, this is helped by the excellent Tamiya instruction book than comes with the car. I replaced all the plain bearings with ballraces while building the kit. Nothing ruins a model car faster than running it with plain bush type bearings (other than crashing it into something).

Assembled propshaft assembly ready for fixing to the car.

The rear end of the chassis with the motor, propshaft, and spur gearbox cover attached.

The propshaft in the TT01 chassis is a plastic component which runs down the middle of the car. Mounting this is one of the first jobs in kit assembly. The shaft transmits power to the front of the car from a spur gear which is spun by the mid/rear longitudinally mounted motor. The front and rear of the shaft feed into geared diff units. The transmission would appear quite a low loss system compared to some other arrangements, a low bearing count and not many gears are used compared to some other cars. The propshaft itself though is made from quite a flexible plastic but this component is easily upgraded to an alloy one if required.

The kit comes with the usual 540 motor. This can be fitted with a variety of pinion gears but the kit only includes one alloy 19t pinion.
