Sand Rover model dune buggy bodyshell
Details and pictures of my modified Sand Rover dune buggy bodyshell.
The finished car bod spayed in metalic green paint.
Lexan paint was used even though this is an ABS moulding. No problems encountered.

The dune buggy bodyshell of the Sand Rover is a great bit of early eighties Tamiya kit (no pun intended).
An ABS moulding with plenty of detail it really stands out from the crowd.
The original paint job on this was a brushed on red enamel pigs ear of a job which I did when I was a kid. It's testiment to the shape of the car that it even looked kind of good with my dodgy old painting.
Anyhow the old paint was removed by the use of some wet and dry paper. I was expecting this to be a real pain of a job but it went quite easily :-) during a boring afternoon.

Once cleaned up from the old paint the new colour had to be decided on. Metalic green spay paint was elected for, this closely beating out metalic blue with gold bringing up the rear in third place. Red for once was nowhere in sight. Several light coats were applied to the dune buggy bodyshell and soon it was looking like new. This being a hard thick ABS moulded shell the paint had to be spayed on the outside just like in the old days. This shows up any bad technique with great ease.
The seats and interior were painted with some enamel I had left over from the dim and distant past of airfix kit building as were the front lights, windsreen posts and roll bar.

Some stickers were applied in random places on the car, not where I messed up the paintwork you understand, ahem.
The whole body would look even better if given a coat of clear lacquer but I'm quitting the painting while I'm still ahead.
