Radio control installation and other details for the modified radio control car

R/C installation, battery placement and other details.

The standard kit Sand Rover as run in the early eighties used Acoms 2 channel radio control and a mechanical resistor type speed controller. The receiver used to be mounted up the front end of the chassis and a hump back 7.2 battery pack was transversely mounted near the rear of the tub.

This modified model car uses a standard 7.2 volt stick battery pack, an electronic speed controller and a single servo for the steering.

Lack of width inside the chassis called for either cutting a hole in the side for the longer stick type battery pack or mounting it differently. It was decided to mount the battery pack longitudinally down the middle of the chassis to avoid cutting and weakening the chassis. The battery is fixed in place by an elastic band and foam mounts at either end.

The receiver is mounted with double sided foam servo tape on the side of the chassis as is the electronic speed controller. Mounting them on the side helps keep them free of water and other stuff which can pool in the bottom of a tub style model car chassis.
The steering servo is fitted where the original once went. All the radio gear is futaba two channel equipment which has performed perfectly over a number of years in many model cars and a few other radio control models.
The switch is mounted inside the chassis instead of underneath in the original.
The speed controller is a Tamiya forward and reverse unit.
That more or less covers the mechanical side of the car. The result of all this work is a rear wheel drive independently coil sprung buggy with oil filled dampers, rear wishbone and front trailing arm suspension, a steel gear train and ballraced all round.
