The Peugeot 405 is a mid-sized family car that started life back in 1988. Manufacture of the model continued until it was replaced by the Peugeot 406 in 97, through this period there were three different marks of the car.

Initial production models included the following;
  • 1.6 carburetter powered car delivering about 92bhp and available in 3 levels of trim.
  • 1.9 carburetter powered vehicle pushing out 110bhp in either GL or GR
  • 1.9 fuel injected 125bhp version, choice of 1.9i or the higher spec 1.9 GTXi

The Peugeot 405 pictured is the 1991 GL model with over 200,000 miles on the clock. Condition of this vehicle is very good for a car 12 years old and of such a high mileage. True testiment to the quality build and general ruggedness of this car.The owner reckons on getting 43 miles per gallon on a good run with this vehicle, an extremely good figure indeed. Generally though you should expect 30 odd MPG from the car.

This 1.6 carburetter powered 405 has the GL trim which includes electric windows.

The proven longevity of the Peugeot 405 and the fact that the car was in producion until 1997 means there should be some good buys around for the 405 for several years to come.

This 1.6 powered 405 uses cheaply priced 165-70-R14 tyres, couple this with great MPG and reliability and it makes for cheap motoring.
1992 saw the introduction of the second wave of Peugeot 405 cars. These new cars were all fuel injected variants ranging from the 1.6i through the 1.8i to the 2.0STi of 123bhp.

Generally higher spec than the previous models and considered to have higher quality build. Power steering and drivers airbag came standard with the vast majority of these post 1992 Peogeot 405s. The new range all had catalytic converter fitted, probably the reason for the lower bhp figures on the 1.6 even though it's injected.

The last range of the 405 were produced up until 1997. This model line up consisted of a general revamping of the range, adding creature comforts like air-conditioning and power steering through most of the range. Safety was also improved with side impact bars being fitted, engine sizes were unchanged.

The Peugeot 405 was produced in both the 4 door saloon as pictured and the highly practical estate car model.

Other production variants included various diesel powered cars as well as 4 wheel drive examples.
