Steel 16 inch wheels on this Hilux Note the leaf springs
|
Toyota's Hilux pickup truck has been a workhorse in the UK and around the world for a great many years now since it's early 70s launch. It has evolved over the years but still retains the essence of the original design.
The truck still uses leaf springs at the rear which support a rigid axle. This helps the truck carry heavy loads without creating strange wheel geometry.
Front suspension is of the double wishbone type.
Since 1995 Toyota added a double cab version of the Hilux to it's range.
|
Powering the Toyota Hilux now in 2004 is an advanced double overhead camshaft 16 valve 4 cylinder turbo diesel which develops 102 bhp (some versions less than this at about 88 bhp). Displacement of the engine is just short of 2.5 litres and max torque of 192 lbft comes in at between 1600 and 2400 RPM, again some versions are under this figure.
The Hilux is a solid, fairly heavy vehicle at over 1600 KG for the single cab 4x4 version. Acceleration and top speed are therefore only adequate.

Brakes on the truck consist of ventilated discs at the front end and drums at the rear. Gearbox is a 5 speed syncro unit.
Most vehicles in the Hilux range come with 16 inch steel wheels as pictured. There is a version that has 15 inch alloys fitted instead.
The truck also comes in a 2wd version for those not wishing the benefits of a 4x4 truck.

The Toyota Hilux is an incredibly durable and tough machine as has recently been demonstrated on BBC's Top Gear program. Anything that can take that sort of punishment and be driven away is worthy of anyone's hard earned money.
